The book is split into three sections, the first and last of which are predominately from the viewpoint of a seven-year-old girl in Chiapas, Mexico during the agrarian revolution under President Cardenas, while the second is a more standard third-person narration of her family’s response to those events. However, I felt the last section to be a bit short, and the ending somewhat abrupt; I wanted it to really stretch out more, and balance the mixtures of the narration, because the story from the The book is split into three sections, the first and last of which are predominately from the viewpoint of a seven-year-old girl in Chiapas, Mexico during the agrarian revolution under President Cardenas, while the second is a more standard third-person narration of her family’s response to those events.
However, Llbro felt the last section to be a bit short, and the ending somewhat abrupt; I wanted it librl really stretch out more, and balance the mixtures of the narration, because the story balub the young girl’s perspective was so much richer and more emotionally compelling.
Overall, though, Castellanos gives a nuanced look at the ways in which different parties dealt with the changing relations between classes, largely focusing on the relations of indigenous groups and the Spanish-speaking elites of the times. She manages to avoid polemic on the topic, balyn instead provides us with a story intriguing in part because we catch only glimpses of what is happening from many different angles, all of which are necessarily incomplete.

Es un retrato fiel y un tanto cruel de una sociedad sumida en la desigualdad, donde el resentimiento y lo desconocido cohabitan con los personajes de una manera escalofriante. I couldn’t find a copy in Spanish, but I can feel how lovely Castellanos’ words must be in the original La historia al principio y bslun final es contada desde el punto de vista de la hija de la patrona a la que nunca la autora le da un nombre. La segunda parte del libro es relatado por diferentes personajes secundarios. Esto nos ayuda a ver el problema desde muchas perspectivas. Es una historia triste en un entorno muy real que toma lugar cajan mediados del siglo XX.
